Shedding our former selves

"We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are."

As we become working professionals, parents, mentors and neighbors, we do a lot of growing up. We are responsible for covering our basic needs while also being granted the freedom to do it our way. We are not required to listen to our parents anymore, at least, according to the law. 😁 In the midst of balancing our responsibilities with our freedoms, we learn more about the person we have become. We have shaped our personality and values. Sometimes it's necessary to reassess our character and outlook on life based on our collective experiences.

I was able to shed my former self in favor of living a better quality of life. It did not happen overnight. It happened it stages. It's still happening. I still keep learning more about myself and how I interact with the world. I credit my growth mindset for helping me start to shed some of my worst traits when I was in my 20's. I learned to be more patient and understanding. I learned to tame my temper and let go of minor things that never should have affected me so much in the first place. It has been a gradual process and I still get tripped up every now and then.

I learned how to let go of my old ways of thinking and doing. I realized my thoughts can be more detrimental to me than my actions, especially once they turn negative. I had to learn how to not attach myself to the negative thoughts that swirl around in my mind every day. I learned how to focus on more positive thinking and expecting better outcomes. It helps by coming from a place of compassion and empathy for myself and others. I'm still grateful every day for having accessed the Love in my heart that helps keep me in a positive frame of mind.

Now when I help others with shedding their former selves I talk in terms of The Old Me vs. The New Me. The Old Me would have never thought of writing a daily wellness blog to help people level up in life. I would have been too concerned about offending people or being misunderstood. The New Me is not concerned because I am always coming from a place of Love. I had to shed my former less-confident self to to get here. I will eventually shed Today's Self to become a better version of me. It's up to us to become who we strive to be, but sometimes it's necessary to leave our former selves behind so we can become our best self.

More Wellness!
