Making the most of today

"We have no idea what tomorrow will bring, but today is overflowing with potential."

- Allan Lokos

Making plans for the future is important, so we have a general idea of where we are headed in life. At the same time, we have to be mindful not to spend too much time planning and not enough time doing. If we are committed to truly living life, it's important to stay committed to making the most out of each day. I still struggle with putting in the required effort to create more opportunities for myself. A recent commitment I made to myself is that I'm going to make more out of each day.

I knew what I really needed was more accountability for myself. We are the ones responsible for our own success. If we are not disciplined enough to stay committed to our goals, it's extremely helpful to have someone holding us accountable. Some people rely on professional support like counselors and coaches, while others turn to trusted friends, colleagues and loved ones. What I found to be helpful for me was partnering up with a friend who was committed to achieving their own personal and professional goals. We agreed to hold each other accountable, a partnership where both sides can reap the benefits of accountability.

When it comes to actually making the most of my day, I realized I was more successful at getting stuff done when I scheduled it on my calendar. If I block out the time, I can't say that I don't have the time. That's why it's important for us to make time for the things that benefit our quality of life. Otherwise, we fill that time up with other activities that do not help us in creating a better future for ourselves. It almost sounds counterintuitive, but we have the ability to create a better future for ourselves by making the most out of today.

It's also not like we have to make the most out of today by only investing in our future. Other ways to make more out of our day is to go for a walk instead of heading to the kitchen for a snack. Grab a book instead of checking out that new show on your favorite streaming service. Call a friend you have not spoken with in a while instead of scrolling through social media. Do something you are passionate about instead of doing something to pass the time. When someone asks you, "What's new?" have something new and exciting to talk about. That's when we know that we are making the most of today.
