"We have to prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child."
The phrase "It takes a village" became a more popular phrase in the US when Hillary Clinton wrote a book with the same title. The phrase originated in Africa, where it was inferred that it takes a village of people to help raise a child. Clinton took it a step further and stressed how, as a nation, the US should be working together to help raise every child by providing them with the necessary resources and support they require to grow up and thrive as adults. I couldn't agree more, although I would take it even a step further.
I feel the need for the entire planet to help raise and support children across the world. There is a great line from a Whitney Houston song, "The greatest love of all." She sings, "I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside." Well put! We have to prepare our youth for growing up in a world where they can realize and maximize their potential. That can be a tough job for parents without support from outside resources like schools, governments, support groups and youth programs.

While I do not have children of my own, I have twelve nieces and nephews (almost thirteen!) who I love passing knowledge on to. I feel it's the responsibility of every adult to set a great example for younger generations who will be helping to lead the world one day. With the planet getting smaller and more connected through globalization and technology, we should feel the need to extend our reach well past our own family and loved ones. The more children in the world who receive the love and support they need, the better off our world will be.
I have gained some of my biggest insights from people and cultures on the other side of the planet. I believe there is so much to gain from blending great ideas and societies. Today's youth are growing up in a much different world than those of us who have already had multiple high school reunions. I think they may even get it more than we do. I always like to refer to all of us as Team Humanity. The more we work together to educate and support our youth, the better off we all will be. It doesn't just take a village, it takes a planet.
