Change for the better

“Your life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change.”

- Jim Rohn

In order to live our best life, or create a better one, we should always be minding our wellbeing and doing our best to maintain and improve our quality of life. It may even seem overwhelming when we consider our careers, our relationships, and our overall health, especially at times when we may not feel like we have the best handle on life. We can choose to make incremental changes that can hopefully affect big change and help us to live our best life, or something close to it.

Have you ever made any small changes in your life that helped spark even bigger and/or more positive changes? It can serve as a domino effect of wellness that keeps us on a path of making smarter and healthier choices for ourselves. An example from my own experience is when I switched careers. I was a technical recruiter for ten years before I switched over to counseling. I was probably in recruiting for five years longer than I should have been. I was miserable at work, which caused me to become unhappy outside of work too. I needed a change.

One day while recruiting, my HR manager told me about a weekend retreat for high school students that helped them address teenage issues like self-esteem, peer pressure and social norms. I reluctantly decided to go on the retreat, thinking I could use the opportunity to possibly even work on developing my own confidence and feelings of self-worth. After attending several retreats as an adult staff volunteer, I chose to pursue a masters degree in Community Counseling, which led to my current role as a Community Care Counselor for an employee assistance program. I am now lucky enough to love my career and my job.

I chose to go on that weekend retreat because I knew I needed some kind of change in my life. I wanted to do something that was going to make a positive difference in my life and hopefully help affect positive change in the lives of others. It led me down an entirely new career path that I love. Now I get to help countless people improve their wellbeing and quality of life. That weekend retreat was the change I needed to open my eyes to a new career and new way of living my life. It's amazing what one little change can do for us. What is one little change you have been considering? What amazing opportunities might that one change unfold?
